Google and Taito intend to use augmented reality to breathe new life into a classic video game! Space Invaders: World Defense is an initiative by both companies that uses technology to simulate a real pixelated space invasion inside planet Earth. According to the announcement, they will be using ARCore and the newly introduced Geospatial Creator to make aliens fly over real places.

Not much information about the project has been revealed, only a GIF shared on twitter which demonstrates what the experience can be like at the end. It shows a static city with several portals appearing, bringing aliens into the scene, which you will have to shoot to save the day. However, it’s worth noting that this may just represent an idea or early stages of development, and not what the title will actually look like.

A video has also been released showing how Taito’s Space Invaders revolutionized the industry 45 years ago, and Google is joining the cause to make the same impact in this generation. According to the official description, aliens will come from another dimension, and you – as one of the best pilots on Earth – will have to use your skills to protect the planet while traveling to another plane.

Google investment in AR

It is worth noting that after the fiasco that Google faced with Stadia, its investments in the gaming sector may move towards augmented reality. Considering that both Apple and Meta are also investing in this sector, this could be the path the company has found for better development within the scenario.

Space Invaders: World Invasion doesn’t have a set release date yet, only a prediction that it will arrive in the Southern Hemisphere during winter. They also didn’t reveal what the minimum specs are to run on your smartphone. Until development is complete or we get closer to it, there should be new gameplay and more information about it.
