Possibility of gasoline with 30% ethanol content raised concerns among several drivers about how this could affect the performance of gasoline-only vehicles.. Earlier this month, Alexander Silveira, Minister of Mines and Energy, stressed that the federal government would discuss the possibility of increasing the new amount from 27.5%.
The last time the ethanol content of gasoline was increased was in 2015, when the fuel now contained 27.5% ethanol.. At the time, an analysis by the National Automobile Manufacturers Association (Anfavea) found that there was no evidence that it could cause problems in gasoline-only vehicles.

Rogério Gonçalves, Director of Fuel at the Brazilian Automotive Engineering Association (AEA), shared his opinion that a likely 3% increase would not affect the performance of a flex-fuel vehicle.. This is because they are manufactured to work with any percentage of ethanol from 22% to 100%.
However, the same situation will not go unnoticed for older cars that run only on gasoline. Rogerio Gonçalves said that drivers will immediately notice an increase in fuel consumption in these cars.
“Thinking about old cars, the obvious and straightforward thing is to increase consumption. There will be losses due to the calorific value of the two fuels. This is already expected, ”said the director of the AEA. In 2015, a test conducted to examine the current 27.5% ethanol in gasoline already confirmed increases in consumption of 1% and 2%.
Automotive parts can also wear out faster.
Rogerio also points out that the tests may indicate effects on materials in the system that help fuel cars, in addition to injection mapping. This is because it is possible that they have been prepared for a certain type of ethanol content and not what it will represent.

Increasing the ethanol content of gasoline to 30% could prevent nearly 3 million tons of carbon dioxide from being emitted annually, Copersucar predicts. Although ethanol is less polluting, it is more aggressive for engines that run exclusively on gasoline.
Components manufacturer Delphi believes that this can significantly affect the condition of some parts of the car. She argues that parts can wear more than usual, which requires increased attention from drivers.
“Due to the composition of ethanol, renewable fuels are more aggressive than gasoline. For this reason, increasing the ethanol content of gasoline can indeed affect the vehicle’s injection system, leading to more rapid wear of parts, ”the manufacturer said.
