Meta and vehicle manufacturer BMW are teaming up for an unparalleled offering in the automotive industry. The idea of ​​both is to create virtual reality elements in the back of your car, using VR and AR technologies for greater interaction with passengers. Considering that both of them have been working on separate projects with this proposal for several years now, combining their ideas could create a real innovation in the market.

To bring the idea to life, they are producing Project Aria, a prototype virtual reality headset that could be used in various applications such as subways and airplanes in the future. According to both companies, their biggest challenge in the beginning was overcoming the difficulty of tracking objects at high speed when a car passes them.

They show that this type of solution has never been seen before, and the answer was found in syncing their operating system with BMW’s rear sensor, allowing them to set a perimeter and show the distance the user is from other elements such as the door, the driver, and even objects outside the vehicle. It is worth noting that interaction with external elements is something of an innovative, forward-looking application that can really change both the technology industry and game production.

The Meta Quest channel posted a video demonstrating how this would work in practice. The promotional materials showcase several applications, such as the ability to view a music player, interact with avatars, meditation software, and even the ability to play something with augmented reality.

Too early for Project Aria

According to Meta engineers, it is too early to say when Project Aria will hit the market and at what price it will be sold. Another question that remains open is whether it will only be offered in BMW vehicles or if it will be released for use in other brands in the future. There may be exclusivity attached to the subscription plan, but neither company has confirmed anything.

BMW has been working on bringing augmented reality to its cars for a decade now, with little success so far.
