The Internet is full of reviews, advertisements and offers for the sale of all kinds of car DVRs and “combine harvesters” that combine the functions of video recording and police camera warning. When purchasing such a device, keep in mind: most likely, it will not be as durable as it may seem at first.

Most often, a motorist acquires a registrar or a “combine” with a similar function, counting on a happy and almost eternal coexistence with a gadget. Sometimes that hope turns out to be unfounded. It happens that the device starts up correctly when the car’s ignition is turned on, projects an “image” from the video camera on the screen, winks reassuringly at the recording icon … But in fact it does not fulfill its direct tasks – new videos do not appear on the “map”.

The author of these lines himself faced a similar situation and one day decided to download a record of an interesting event on the road from the memory of the device to a home computer. I poked my head in – and on the “map” there are only videos from two years ago, there is nothing new. It turns out I’ve actually been driving without a DVR for the past few years, with “props”. It’s good that the “treason” was discovered in a harmless situation, and not when a photo of it could solve a real problem in communicating with the traffic police or analyzing the consequences of an accident.

The reasons for the failure of car video recording devices are different. In addition, for car owners who prefer to keep the screen of a working device turned off, they become a particularly unexpected surprise.

The most banal of these is a software “glitch”. Basically it is eliminated by simply flashing the device. The problem is that it is not always possible to find the right version of the software: sometimes the brands under which car recorders are produced appear and disappear without a trace after two or three years.

In addition, not every driver will bother to reprogram a device bought for little money a few years ago. The last point, in general, is fully valid in case of a malfunction of the registrar: when the “brain” goes out and builds, bad contacts in certain places of the electrical circuit, when the screen breaks and other problems.

It is also worth remembering that the service life of all types of automotive video recording devices, guaranteed by the manufacturer, rarely exceeds 1-1.5 years. And some sellers of such equipment are generally limited to a statement: “only 30 days for returns and exchanges.” This means that the maximum period in which one can hope for trouble-free operation of a typical “regional” does not exceed one and a half years.

After this period has passed, you can “randomly” hope and drive with a potentially unusable device, or buy a new one. Be that as it may, it is recommended to update the personal “park” of video fixation devices at the beginning of 2-3 years of operation – so that in that case you do not bite your elbows after, for example, a controversial accident.
