The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) has fined Facebook’s parent company Meta 1.2 billion euros for violations related to the transfer of personal data from the European Union
As reported by Ukrinform, RTE reported this.
This is the largest EU privacy penalty ever, surpassing the previous record penalty of 746m euros imposed on Amazon in 2021.
As part of the decision, Meta was instructed to suspend data transfers from the EU to the US.
The regulator also gave the company six months to stop the illegal processing, including storage in the US, of personal data of European users transferred in violation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Meta has already announced that it will appeal this decision.
The DPC did not recommend a fine in its initial decision, but some European regulators disagreed and eventually the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) ordered Meta to be fined.
As reported by Ukrinform, the UK’s regulator has fined the TikTok social network about $16 million for improper use of children’s personal data.
