What kind of fake traffic police cameras can drivers ignore
The limits of automatic control of traffic violations in Russia are becoming more and more every year. But some are really nothing more than a “scarecrow” for car owners.

Sometimes it seems that soon it will be impossible to drive a car without hitting the lens of an automated traffic police tracking system. But police reports detailing the widening limits of such control are clearly disingenuous. The fact is that a lot of “fake” cameras are currently installed on Russian roads. That is, devices that generally exist only for looks. How to distinguish such snags from truly punitive complexes?

In fact, this can be done simply by having normal eyesight. For those to whom we tell all police cameras “on the same face,” a harmless device looks like two cube-shaped “boxes” mounted on a lighting pole or structure above the road. One of the complex’s “boxes” contains a video camera that captures cars, and the second contains a radar that measures their speed. I’ve seen such a thing once – you can’t confuse it with anything. There are still many of them hanging all over Russia. Although the production of Strelka-ST, as this device is exactly called, was already discontinued in 2017! The warranty period for these complexes was three years.

This means that three years ago, in 2020, almost all Strelok-ST boxes from full-fledged suppliers of “raw materials” for fines to car owners turned into harmless pieces of iron connected to the power grid.

Then they were replaced by a mass of new models of police cameras – both from the Strelka manufacturer itself and from a dozen other companies that supplied such equipment for the traffic police. Characteristically, the vast majority of new models do not measure the speed of the car on the basis of the reflected radio signal, but by analyzing the video image of a passing car.

It’s funny, but so far in the advertising notes for most radar detectors sold in Russia, they talk about the ability of these devices to detect the radiation of police radars of the Strelka brand.

What do the Strelok-ST boxes do over the roads? They certainly don’t measure the speed of cars. The old Strelkas are now mainly used by the police as dummies – as “scarecrows” for motorists, forcing them not to exceed the speed limit where the aging complex’s now useless radar works. Characteristically, in recent years, the traffic police have stopped reporting on targeted purchases of dummies from cameras, which they used to do regularly. This makes sense: why buy them on purpose when there are a lot of decommissioned Strelok-STs on hand?! So the driver, seeing some characteristic “boxes” on the pole in front of him, should not overexert: most likely, this is not a real automatic fixation complex, but a snag of the traffic police.
