Russian roads may soon “stand up” due to huge problems with bridges

In the middle of the last decade, the problem of a national “bridging” was actively discussed in Russia, and in 2019 the government transport commission even approved a corresponding program to “bring artificial constructions to a standard state”. However, this measure did not help – the problem is still very acute.

Speaking at the Road Initiatives Forum, which opened in Sochi on the first day of summer, Irek Yalalov, deputy chairman of the Federation Council’s economic policy committee, said there are about 5,700 emergency and pre-emergency bridges in Russia. That is, 14% of artificial structures are in urgent need of repair, since there are about 42,000 in the country, and that percentage is only increasing.

With this huge problem, the authorities of the “land of falling bridges”, as the media called Russia in the 2010s, are fighting for the fourth year. As part of the support program, regional governments were offered financial support. However, of the 84 subjects, only a small part used the money received for the reconstruction of emergency structures – the majority preferred to use them for road repairs, which for some reason was not prohibited by the same program.

By the way, it is interesting that, according to Mr. Yalalov, the reason for the “fluidity” of bridges is not at all in the fact that the structures are too old, and their service life has simply come to an end. The thing is different – the structures did not last their standard period, due in part to the active use of road reagents that destroy everything in their path.
