The technical confrontation between police cameras for monitoring traffic violations and devices that warn motorists of such “ambushes” directly on the track has been going on for decades with varying degrees of success on the part of the parties. Some makers of photo and video recording systems are now using technology to determine the speed of a car, which precludes the detection of their products using radar detectors.

The oldest of the technologies for calculating the speed of a car from a distance is radar. It is based on the Doppler effect. It is used to determine the speed of an object by changing the frequency of the reflected radio wave. The wave reflected from the object approaching the transmitter has a higher frequency than the original one. The greater the difference, the higher the speed of the object.

Radar detectors have long detected, with varying degrees of success, the emission of police speed traps and warned car owners to approach them. But with the development of computer technology, due to which calculation modules became quite cheap and compact, automatic fixation cameras appeared that work according to completely different principles.

The increased computing capabilities of the traffic police complexes have made it possible to widely apply the method of determining the speed of a car by analyzing a video image. The camera processor calculates the time it takes the car to pass its field of view using a not so difficult algorithm. Taking into account that the length of the road segment entering the lens is known in advance, it becomes a matter of technology to calculate the speed of the car. To create such a speed control complex, a sufficiently powerful processor and decent camera optics are required.

But no radar detector can detect signs of its work in advance. The level and characteristics of the electromagnetic radiation emitted by the video camera and associated computer are similar to those emitted by the car’s on-board electronics. The radar detector was not originally designed to detect them.

Thus, it is possible to find out about the police lines of control of traffic violations of this type, only using the database of camera coordinates preloaded into the “anti-radar”. The fresher it is, the more confidence in the device’s alerts. At the same time, it turns out that the classic radar detector is in demand only in one case – to warn against mobile speed control systems. Because you can’t enter their coordinates into the database: they change all the time.

Cameras that calculate speed ‘via video’ include Strelka-plus, Avtohuragan-VSM, Traffic Scanner-K2 and a number of others. Visually distinguishing radar-like complexes is quite simple. If you see something on the other side of the road that resembles a video camera monitoring the perimeter of an enterprise or institution, then most likely this device calculates the speed of cars “from the video sequence”. And all sorts of metal “boxes”, “birdhouses”, “boxes with slots” – all these are devices that measure speed using radar.
