A noticeable shortage in the Russian light commercial vehicle market will soon be filled by Chinese cars – as is happening now in the passenger car sector. An important role in this matter can be played by BAW trucks from … Bryansk.

The assembly of light trucks of the Chinese brand BAW will soon begin on the site of the former Bryansk Automobile Plant. In fact, this will be the second “arrival” of the brand on Russian soil. The first ended in 2014, when the brand stopped officially supplying its equipment to our market.

And now, after almost 10 years, it became known that the Bryansk company BM-Motors has signed an agreement with the Chinese brand for the supply of its light commercial vehicles to Russia. We are talking about models with a load capacity of 1000 and 1500 kg. The first is with single rear wheels and the second is with double wheels. Under the hood of both cars will be a 2-liter 133 hp naturally aspirated petrol engine.

Rear-wheel drive, gearbox – 5-speed “mechanics”. Cabins are expected in two versions: standard double and with two rows of seats. BM-Motors expects to import about 200,000 such cars into Russia in 10 years. In addition, half of them will receive factory-made gas balloon equipment designed to power the engine with methane. Future plans are to bring an electric version of this LCV.

It is characteristic that cars are sold on the domestic market not with Chinese names, but under specially invented Russian names. With the process of their registration underway, BM-Motors has so far declined to announce them.

According to the head of the company Alexei Podshchekoldin, the cars will be brought to Russia in the form of a chassis. In Bryansk, they will be equipped with bodies depending on the needs of the market. In the first phase, these will be cargo platforms and vans. In the future, it is planned to install a wide variety of bodies on the chassis of the hitherto unnamed BAWs – right up to tanks and even campers.

The approximate price of cars on a Chinese chassis is expected to be about 2 million rubles, depending on the specific type of superstructure. What makes these BAWs direct competitors of the Russian UAZ Profi. The recommended retail prices for Ulyanovsk cars of various modifications do not exceed 2 million and start from 1.5 million rubles for a built-in tilting car. However, in the minus of the UAZ is an ambiguous reputation for reliability and the absence in the line of cars equipped with a factory-made methane fuel supply system.

From the point of view of the owner’s fuel costs, the “gas” BAW more than compensates for the price difference even with the cheapest “Profi” equipment. In addition, OOO Gazprom Gas Engine Fuel has already been “threaded” into the project of the Russian-Chinese LCV. The company will provide discounts on gas to BAW buyers, participate in other marketing campaigns and also plans to purchase these cars for its company fleet.
