Fashion in casual style: test drive the new Omoda S5 sedan
The new Omoda sedan with the letter S5 has become the second model in the product line of the Chinese brand on the Russian market. The AvtoVzglyad portal has tested an ambitious new product on the first test drive and is ready to share its impressions.

After meeting the pioneer Omoda in the face of the C5 crossover, which attracts with an extraordinary futuristic design and spacious interior, the sedan does not seem to be anything special. The facade is decorated with a scattering of “diamonds” neatly laid out on the “grill”, and the stern evokes nostalgia for the Toyota Corolla.

Light graphics and other design metamorphoses give the feeling of “putting on the best at once”. And speech, alas, not that the car is incredibly beautiful. Rather, it is seen as a symbiosis of many solutions, which we have seen before. It doesn’t make him worse, but it doesn’t make him better than the others either. Let’s put it this way: an ordinary C-class sedan in Casual style, which will certainly be appreciated by taxi drivers and those who want to “rise” by replacing the domestic LADA Vesta with a foreign car.

The interior is much more interesting. Of course, there were no sensations here, but the layout and texture are on top. And you don’t have to be a car critic to understand: conciseness in the design of the cabin was invented not for the sake of economy, but for ergonomics. The most important controls and options for comfort are not hidden in the bowels of the multimedia system’s 10.25-inch touchpad. Everything, as they say, in front of your eyes and at your fingertips.

Also nice is the multi-colored interactive dashboard with built-in indicators, which can be easily adjusted on the multifunction “steering wheel”. A sliding roof and wireless charging for smartphones are a nice bonus. True, the mat, where the gadget lies for charging, is sometimes removed along with the phone, and losing it is a trifling matter.

The steering wheel is adjustable in height and reach, but the seat cushion is clearly a bit short. A basketball player like me has to sit with his back bent or knees behind his ears. In addition, the headrests are not very conveniently located here. To lower your head back and reach the edge, raise the seat back almost vertically or move the seat closer to the steering wheel. On long journeys, I tell you, the Gullivers will not be kind.

Questions also arose about the operation of the air conditioning, which is too cold or too cold. Simply put, you have to turn the air conditioner handle permanently. Especially if you are accompanied in the back row by passengers who are still warm and you are already cold. By the way, the gallery is not devoid of space, and you can spread out there very freely. True, if there are two tall riders, the third should shrink at the knees and elbows.

But what kind of noise insulation is in the Omoda S5 – it’s quiet here, like in a queue for the dentist. Extraneous sounds do not irritate, so you can talk calmly even at exorbitant speed. Perhaps only with a sharp acceleration, the “scream” of the engine breaks into the cabin, which, however, is easily extinguished with a decent sound from an audio system that can play music from mobile devices, both over the air and via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay .

By the way, about the engine. The turbocharger, which “blows out” 147 forces of force from the “one and a half”, confidently pulls 1.4 tons of iron. The maximum torque of 210 Nm is reached from 1800 rpm, allowing the car to cover the first hundred from a standstill in 9.7 seconds. Yes, not a “gun race”, but for a city sedan – quite. What can not be said about the younger aspiration with a capacity of 113 liters. s., what, if it “goes”, only in the dreams of phlegmatic drivers. However, for a taxi – that’s all. Consumption – only six liters, and AI-92. As for the “turbo”, then the appetite is more serious: the melancholic driving turns into 8 liters per hundred, and the dynamic “gobbles up” all 12.

The engine is accompanied by a continuously variable gearbox, which is not able to simulate gear changes, which, as already mentioned, forces the engine to monotonous howl during intense acceleration. There are economy and sport modes to choose from. I’d venture to suggest that it’s Sport that will become commonplace for drivers while driving, as the accelerator pedal turns into a spring with it, creating the illusion of more playful acceleration. In addition, the steering wheel is molded with a pleasant heaviness, which provokes active exercises while driving.

And driving the Omoda S5 is just as cool as watching a senile Biden perform. The car fits snugly on the road surface, only annoying pile-ups on sharp turns. The suspension gladly swallows the “surprises” of Russian directions and only on sharp flaws in the canvas breaks with a shudder, urging the pilot to correct the trajectory. Soft springs combined with the beam in a different way and do not know how.

At home, the car has been sold under the Chery brand and model name Arrizo 5 Plus since 2018, so don’t be surprised if some elements of the Omoda S5 show the corresponding (inappropriate) names. In particular on the speakers of the audio system, blocking headlights and in other places.

Oddly enough, the “original” of the parent brand is also presented in Russia. True, Arrizo is supplied only through the channels of “gray” imports and, as you understand, it has no guarantee. But it’s cheaper! Judge for yourself: 1,700,000 rubles against 2,200,000 and not everyone wants (read – can) pay half a million “wooden” for a “fashionable” nameplate and a five-year warranty.

Meanwhile, Omoda representatives, by launching their novelty, plan to increase their share of the Russian market and even get into the TOP-5 car brands in terms of sales. But if it works, we’ll see.
