Electric cars in Russia could kill a new mode of transportation

An expert from Moscow Polytechnic University spoke about the potential of hydrogen vehicles in the cargo segment. Such innovative power plants will be in demand among heavy truck manufacturers. They are more obvious than “electric trains” with an unpredictable power reserve and slow charging.

Cars with a hydrogen engine will be out of reach for the population for a long time due to their high costs. But they will quickly take root in the public and freight economy. This was stated by Dmitry Apelinsky, associate professor of the Department of power plants of transportation and small-scale energy at Moscow Polytechnic University.

The expert points out the main disadvantages of electric vehicles that are now available. This is a fairly low mileage and a long charging time. Now the average travel distance, taking into account our climatic conditions, is about 150 km at a speed of 70 km/h. If the speed is increased, the power reserve is greatly reduced. Say, at 130 km/h it is already 70 km.

And the production of electric cars is largely environmentally polluting. Hydrogen power plants can solve the problem. In the future, they will compete with electric trains. They have faster fueling and higher mileage. However, they are much more expensive and the infrastructure is not yet developed.

The expert also recalls that Russia has approved an action plan for the development of hydrogen energy until 2024, which includes training. This should contribute to the improvement of hydrogen transport technologies.
