According to the results of the first five months of 2023, an increase in the number of accidents was recorded on the roads of Russia. According to the head of the traffic police of the Russian Federation, Mikhail Chernikov, the number of road accidents has increased by 5.2% to more than 44,000 cases. From January to May, 4,639 people died in accidents, which is 3.1% more than in the same period last year.

The main reasons for the increase in accidents, Lieutenant General Chernikov, in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta, called a change in traffic flows and an increase in car traffic along those routes that used to be secondary, but have now become key.

Until February 2022, the main freight traffic went west, then it was redistributed to Asian and southern halfway through last year. A large number of large trucks were redirected to the Far East, the South East and Black Sea ports. And since many of the local routes turned out not to be as suitable for mass transportation of large tonnages as the long-developed western roads in the European part of Russia, this caused an increase in the number of accidents.

At the same time, the volume of domestic motor tourism increased. Everyone has to drive on congested roads, which could contribute to a further increase in accidents in the summer of 2023. Drivers are in a hurry and often indulge in dangerous overtaking. Nearly one in three deaths by 2023 will be related to frontal collisions in the oncoming lane. And every fourth – in violation of the speed limit.
