Moscow may ban electric scooters from driving faster than 10 km/h

Artem Sheikin, deputy chairman of the Council for the Development of the Digital Economy under the Federation Council, suggested that Moscow authorities lower the speed limit of electric scooters on the sidewalks of the capital to 10 km/h.

“Taking into account the great social significance of this problem, I propose to elaborate the issue of introducing all sidewalks in traffic zones with a speed limit of 10 km / h,” the senator said in a letter addressed to the mayor of Moscow.

Artem Sheikin believes that a scooter riding on the sidewalk threatens a pedestrian with great danger. From his point of view, the speed at which such personal mobility aids (IMs) are now developing is “too fast for safe movement in pedestrian areas”.

“Similar measures are in place in many other cities and ensure safer interaction between pedestrians and cyclists/scooters. Putting such restrictions in place will help reduce the risk of serious injury on the sidewalks and create a safer environment for pedestrians of all ages, Sheikin said.

Earlier, Sheikin already took the initiative to increase the fines that threaten a violator of the traffic rules on an electric scooter by at least 10 times. Recall that now, according to the Code of Administrative Offenses, such a citizen is subject to a maximum fine of ₽ 1,500. He also proposed to force all electric scooter owners – both private traders and kicksharing companies – to register their SIM card in one information system. With his help, according to Senator Sheikin, it will be possible to identify and punish violators of the rules and those responsible for accidents involving such equipment, reports RIA Novosti.

Recall that the experts of the AvtoVzglyad portal have repeatedly explained why the speed of electric scooters should be forcibly limited to 8 km/h.
