According to last year’s results, a 5.2% increase in the number of accidents on the country’s roads was recorded. Accident causes include turning into the oncoming lane, wrong choice of speed limit, and collisions with pedestrians. At the same time, a third of fatal accidents occur on federal highways.
As the chief of the traffic police said, one of the main ways to solve the problem under the Safe and Quality Roads program is to separate oncoming traffic flows by installing barriers. However, this is by no means the only measure.
“A large number of drivers fall asleep at the wheel and fly into a ditch,” said the head of the traffic police, Mikhail Chernikov, at a press conference in Izvestia. “Fatigue is a plague, as is drunkenness. Therefore, electronic systems are needed to monitor driver fatigue. Now similar devices are sold in stores. However, the development of technology allows you to go one step further: automated operating systems are already being tested. KAMAZ and Yandex have very good results.
I myself ended up testing a vehicle with an autopilot. The system saw me and stopped the car. This highly intelligent eye knows no fatigue and even at night sees an obstacle much further than a person, – said the country’s chief traffic police officer.
Recall that Yandex cars have been tested on the capital’s roads for more than a year, and self-driving trucks have been tested on the M-11 Neva highway since June 2023.
