Echo dot 5th generation

Design

Starting from the design, when comparing it to the 4th generation model, you might not notice any difference. However, Amazon has removed the P2 port on the back of the box. So no extra connections on the 5th generation, you should only connect your devices to it via Bluetooth.

If you choose the digital clock version and compare it with the previous generation, you will notice that LED display also received optimizations. Now it doesn’t just show the clock like in the 4th generation, the new display also shows the weather information, the titles of the songs you are playing and deciphers some of the words. And, as always, the backlight of the watch dims as ambient light is dimmed to make it more comfortable for the wearer.

Hardware

In terms of internals, the 5th generation brings a new processor AZ2 Neural edge. Since this is a new generation chip, in theory the response to voice commands will be faster. In our test, we didn’t notice much of a difference.

In addition, the new Echo Dot has a built-in temperature sensor (same as in the 4th generation Echo) and accelerometer, allowing you to control it with touch commands. That is, you can press the top or sides to snooze an alarm, pause and resume music, stop a timer, or hang up a call. And, of course, if you press the physical buttons without interfering with their work with the accelerometer functions.

You can disable touch controls in the Echo Dot settings in the Alexa app. This touch function, among other things, also appeared in the latest echo pop.

returning to temperature sensor: You can use this function to create procedures and receive notifications. For example, you can set Echo Dot to let you know if your kids’ room is too cold, below a certain temperature, and even automatically turn on a compatible heater to warm up the room. Or, if you leave the house and leave your dog indoors, you can set up a program to turn on the air conditioner remotely.

These various subroutine parameters can also be configured using ultrasonic motion detection sensor – which was already available on the 4th generation Echo Dot. Like the temperature sensor, you can set it to turn off the ambient light when no one is around. Or turn on the light automatically as soon as someone enters the house or room.

Sound

In terms of sound quality, the 5th generation Echo Dot features an updated driver and a 1.73-inch front-facing speaker. For comparison, the 4th generation has a 1.6-inch speaker. Amazon says the new box produces 2x more bass than the previous one. generation and less distortion – which is very noticeable when comparing two boxes at maximum sound volume.

Other features

Some Echo devices are compatible with routers. aero is a brand bought by Amazon. When the boxes are connected to the system of these routers, they can work as Wi-Fi signal repeaters. Eero routers have WiFi 6Ewhich reaches 6 GHz. Amazon Alexa boxes in the Wi-Fi 5 standard are limited to 100 Mbps and 10 connected devices, so they can have different speeds.

Compatible with Eero routers: echo pop, echo dot 4th and 5th generation (or higher) and Echo dot with clock 4th and 5th generation (or higher).
