A new unusual engine is always interesting. And we are extremely excited, because this is not an electric motor, but damn it, a gasoline-versus two-stroke “eight”! Granada-based Spanish startup INNengine has announced its development as a new opposed piston engine. And don’t worry, you don’t have to mix oil with gasoline. Everything is much more complicated.

The new engine is 400% more efficient and 70% lighter than conventional four-cylinder combustion engines. This barrel weighs only 35 kg and takes up no more than half the space of the average “four”. At the same time, the return of the engine, which, by the way, has no block head, no crankshaft, no camshaft and valves, is quite mature – 120 “horses”. And that with a capacity of only 0.5 litres.

The new engine has only four combustion chambers, each with two pistons. The bars are not visible. The pistons are mounted on rollers pressed against an adjustable circular paddle plate. The adjustment allows you to influence the gas distribution and compression ratio of the engine. When the petal reaches its peak, the piston rushes to top dead center, where fuel is injected directly into the cylinder and the spark plug ignites the compressed air-fuel mixture.

Oddly, power is delivered at both ends of the motor. Therefore, the gearbox can be attached to it from any side. And you can connect up to two power take-offs. On the one hand, for example, on wheels. And on the other hand, in a hybrid circuit, a generator for charging an electric battery. In any case, the configuration of the engine provides excellent balance, minimizing the standard drawbacks of internal combustion engines – noise and vibration.

Startups are still running their brainchild. The novelty fits perfectly under the hood of a show car based on the Mazda Miata. However, it is a pity that they do not consider working in traditional cars as a career for their invention. The inventors are focused on purely hybrid concepts, for which, to be honest, an internal combustion engine with such low weight and high efficiency is just right …
