Why Russia will never have its own supercar or electric car

The automotive industry, as it was a sore spot in our country, remains so to this day. Can individual fighters against industry’s backwardness correct this innate defect? The AvtoVzglyad portal drew attention to the fact that another statement was made on the air about the possibility of accomplishing this epic feat on your own.
As the Soviet classic wrote: “Ivashka Khmyrev was the first to split the atom in the 12th century, when he was chopping firewood. The USSR is the birthplace of elephants. All this is quite possible, but no one has ever stuttered about Russia’s priority in the auto industry. If anyone does not know, the novel “The Twelve Chairs” was written in 1927 – at the dawn of motoring. And so the Moscow – Samara – Moscow run is described there:
“I read in the paper that there are two Packards, two Fiats and one Studebaker.
It seemed to me, or is there not a single domestic name in this list? And a little earlier, in the same work, it is reported that “one hundred and twenty small black Renault taxis, similar to Brownings, arrived in Moscow.” How, is it really Renault, and not Russo-Balt?
foster fathers
Thanks to whom the famous Nizhny Novgorod GAZ was born? Thanks to Ford. By the way, Moskvich was also built with her participation. On the assembly of which cars did the late ZIL stand up? In the assembly of FIAT cars. Besides, few people know about it. But everyone knows the VAZ with its Zhiguli and Ladami, even children.
Here is such a sad backdrop to our auto industry. However, there are enthusiasts from time to time who are willing to stir up something homely on their own soil, which in light of the above causes some bewilderment. Recently, Igor Yermilin, known in motorsport circles, who used to participate as a designer in the construction project of the domestic sports car Marusya, made another statement on this topic in Kommersant. He literally stated the following:
– Marussia is beautiful, looks great and still attracts attention, people love it, but although this is not the last century, it is a concept from 15 years ago. If we were making an FIA GT racing car now, we would have made it with a different level of understanding, technology and materials. We are working to use our experience to create a car that is much cooler than the Marussia. We understand that we are ready to make this new race car in-house.
Of course, we do not know in detail all the ups and downs of the project “Marusya” under the strict guidance of the showman, guitarist and vocalist with the mouth Nikolai Fomenko. However, one thing can be said firmly and confidently – it ended in nothing. In addition, the equally sad outcome outpaced both the production of the GT car and the Formula 1 team of the same name.
Chickens for laughter
And is it possible to call “Marusya” a truly advanced domestic product? Let’s listen to the same Igor Ermilin. The sports car was based on a steel structure, because carbon was not very good then – and it still is now. The engine came from Renault Vel Satis, the gearbox was from Aisin. Road versions were planned to be produced with Nissan and Infiniti engines. To get the car into the GT3 series, it was desirable to get a Lamborghini Huracan engine and a six-speed sequential sports gearbox, which our production people had never heard of.
It is unlikely that Mr. Designer, having such a production base for that old Marusya, intends to build a new one on another base. Naturally, he takes a more advanced nine-speed gearbox and a more powerful engine, but again a foreign one.
For fun, we can recall another household “project from scratch”. I mean the infamous “Yo-mobile” of the oligarch Mikhail Prokhorov. Initially it was clear that this was rare bullshit, intended for PR and irrevocable subsidies from the state. But laughter is laughter, and facts are stubborn things. No homebrew homebrew auto project has even reached the homebrew small scale production stage.
Construction in one face
What’s the problem? Is Mr Yermilin right or wrong? As for the declarative – absolutely right. By the way, the same point of view is also supported by political scientist Dmitry Drobnitsky, widely known in narrow circles, as the AvtoVzglyad portal recently wrote. And in particular – just as absolutely wrong. An enthusiast who wants to build a high-tech industry in one mug is either an advanced con artist or an idealistic idiot.
Even a no-brainer, just not to President Biden: Without direct, effective and systemic (let’s pay attention to all three words) state aid, nothing will get off the ground. And the critical moment has already come when the heads of the relevant ministries and departments, as they used to say in the USSR, should no longer pick their noses thoughtfully. Let’s recall the classic again, but now from the pre-Soviet period:
Lakhmotiev Alexey beautifully says,
That radical drugs are needed here,
The stomach no longer boils.
