What is a brake caliper overhaul? Remove, clean, wave, but collect consumables. All cases – for the evening. The reason, by the way, is simple: a torn oil seal and a lot of rust in the cylinder. But there is reason to think about buying new mechanism guides: their cost is half the budget, but they look extremely sad.

Rare, apparently, service, the use of mediocre materials and years have done their job – the “guides” were covered with a thick layer of rye and chips, so it is no longer possible to leave them in this form. However, the advice of colleagues “fortunately” suggests that it is too early to go to the store. First you need to take a fine – one-thousandth – sandpaper and try to polish the caliper guides. At least to experiment. I must say, successful.

To speed up the process, place the “guide” in the screwdriver holder, hold the sandpaper with your hand and start the cleaning process. About a miracle: after a few sessions and several replacements of the “cloth”, glimpses appear on our hairpin, and then an absolutely smooth and even surface. There are no shells and no traces of corrosion, sparkling metal and therefore the ability to continue to operate the guide. And this is almost one and a half thousand rubles. savings on every caliper.

There should be a catch in Russian history, so only three of the four removed elements were brought back to life. One of the guides refused to be cleaned no matter how much it was twisted and no matter where it was soaked. The reason, as it seems now, lies in the absence – hello lovers of the secondary – rubber housing and lubricating the moving part not with a special lubricant for the brakes, but with improvised means. For example solid oil.

After completing the experiment with sandpaper and caliper guides, it is worth noting a pleasant result: an hour of work and two sheets of sandpaper made it possible to significantly reduce the cost of repairs. Will the master provide such a service? Of course not. However, when self-maintaining the car, such subtleties may have to be borne in mind.
