Car assembly at the former Volkswagen plant in the Kaluga region could resume before the end of this year. This was mentioned by Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Denis Manturov. But what does that mean if the AGR Automotive Group’s deal with Chery/Omoda seems to fall through?
“I think this could happen before the end of the year,” the deputy prime minister suggested, speaking of the start of car production at the Grabtsevo technopark plant near Kaluga. But the senior official unfortunately did not share any details.
Recall that on May 19, Volkswagen announced the sale of its stake in Volkswagen Group Rus to the Russian LLC Art-Finance, the owner of Avilon dealerships, for 125 million euros. In addition to the factory, the buyer acquired control over the warehouse and service activities of the German concern in our country, including Scania’s assets. Later, Volkswagen Group Rus announced a name change to AGR LLC / AGR Automotive Group.
Meanwhile, according to information from one of the UK public, a car transporter with Chinese Volkswagen Talagon crossovers was recently seen at the entrance to the enterprise. What could this mean: are dealers simply using warehouse space for parallel imports from China, or has a batch of machines arrived at the factory to study and adjust their production? There is no answer to this question yet, but the wait won’t be long.
Recall that Avilon dealers have long sold the Chinese-made Volkswagen Talagon (a joint venture between FAW-Volkswagen) – a three-row crossover 5.15 meters long, built on the platform of the well-known Teramont. At a price of more than 5 million rubles, the all-wheel drive Talagon is offered with a 2-liter TSI turbo four with 220 horsepower and a robot with two clutches. Incidentally, the Talagon is 117 mm longer than the Teramont, although they have the same wheelbase. And Teramont is also assembled in China, but already at the SAIC-Volkswagen plant.
