The heyday of this trio’s career fell around 2006-2014. This is the third generation RAV4, the second X-Trail and the restless CX-7, which died in 2012. From it, the consumer qualities of the “Japanese” turned out to be close. But which crossover is better to choose? The answer to this question was found by the AvtoVzglyad portal.
Toyota RAV4 until the third generation was an extremely balanced concept of a universal car, which became an icon for other manufacturers. Nissan followed. Especially with the second generation, he learned all the lessons from the failures with the first X-Trail.
The most difficult was the small Mazda, which, although it was at the peak of success with the Mazda3 model by that time, was not ready for the release of the crossover. There was not even a suitable engine at hand. And yet the CX-7 managed to convert the built-up brand authority into good sales.
Even a well-used Toyota remains valuable. Today on the market you can not find a “living” car of the third generation, even the earliest, cheaper than a million. The most popular with us were two petrol engines: 2.0 (152 hp) and 2.4 liters (170 hp). The 2.4 engine has also been brought to the US, so it made it easily with 92nd gasoline. The distribution drive in both cases is a chain drive with an excellent capacity of more than 200,000 km. Problems appear after 150,000 km, when the engines begin to eat up oil. The remedy is to replace the piston rings. On the same runs, the pump leaks, which increases the risk of overheating.
Nissan keeps the rhythm of time weaker than Toyota. This is reflected in the price of machines of the same age. There were also two engines: gasoline “fours” 2.0 (141 hp) and 2.5 (169 hp). The design is one, but the smaller one gives more problems. The problems are the same – coking of the rings after the 150,000 km milestone. In addition, they famously drove oil due to a piston failure. And the timing chain is stretched and needs to be replaced even sooner.
Mazda CX-7 is also still in price. Inside, she appears to be the wealthiest of the other islanders. High-quality finishing materials and interior design captivate. However, this should not create any illusions.
Prices for used CX-7s can be surprising. The four-wheel drive version with 2.3 turbo engine (238 hp) costs much less than they charge for a 163 hp modification with a 2.5 naturally aspirated engine of the same age. The answer is a troublesome and capricious 2.3 turbo engine, borrowed from the MPS series, the “snail” of which actually became a consumable. By the way, there were other problems, who likes when the engine’s appetite exceeds 13 l / 100 km on the track in economy mode.
The RAV4’s suspension is stiff but firm. Wheel bearings and ball bearings last an average of up to 100,000 km. The weak point is the bushings of the wheelhouse. They rarely go longer than 60,000 km. Almost with every MOT it is advisable to clean the calipers so that they do not acidify. But electrically, with the exception of a decaying brake light sensor under the brake pedal, Toyota has no weak points.
X-Trail as a whole ages faster than its competitors: a dead interior with deformed seats has already been seen on cars 4-5 years old, what can we say about it today. The paintwork of the Nissan is softer, weaker chrome, the fifth door is probably already “blooming”.
Rigid suspension does not mean reliability. Stabilizer mounts and ball joints last less than 40,000 km. Weak thrust bearings. After 150,000 km of driving, brakes, steering rack, cardan shaft connections and CV joints regularly alternate in service orders. There are many problems with the X-Trail: a fuel level sensor out of control, an erratic fuel pump, the weak link is the heater motor. At the same time, spare parts for Nissan have always cost more democratically than competitors.
The battered CX-7 will probably have few problems. The negative is mainly associated with creaking and worn out silent racks. Otherwise, Mazda has no more contraindications than its competitors. Dignity – trim, undisputed automatic transmission and a very durable suspension. They say those same racks sometimes last up to 200,000 miles without replacement.
In short, the successful CX-7 with an aspiration of 2.5 liters is by no means cheaper than its competitors. A great option, if you don’t mind the front-wheel drive. But the right Nissan will have to be looked for with a diesel engine and on the “machine”. And this is difficult, there were no more than 5% of such cars on the market. Standard: Two-liter X-Trail with a CVT – today the purchase is so-so.
Well, Toyota will always be a Toyota: from transmissions, we recommend reliable automatic transmissions or “mechanics”. The variator, which appeared with the 2010 restyling, on the “secondary” is also not an option.
