Last year, the topic of remotorization, at the suggestion of Avtotor’s top managers, amazed the specialized media. The idea of replacing the internal combustion engine of an old car with an electric motor and battery seemed daring and intimidating. for what? How? Where to get units? Questions – a million. And so the story continued: at the MIMS-2023 exhibition, the Kaliningraders presented an already more or less formed project. Portal “AvtoVzglyad” discussed the bright green future during the session “Remotorization: opportunities and prospects”.

At the capital’s auto forum, it turned out that Avtotor is at the forefront of the start of production of a whole line of electric motors with power from 23 kW to 120 kW. Units, licenses and all documentation the company has ever bought from the Koreans. But the level of localization is expected to be unprecedented: up to 70%, including hull casting. The company plans to develop and produce gearboxes itself.

Not started from a good life. The country needs affordable electric cars, and electric components are not available anywhere else but from the Chinese. There was no manufacturer of medium-sized electric motors in all of Russia, so we had to move ourselves.

And the partners represented by the structures of Rosatom, who is also in the process of creating his own electric car, will soon be able to help Kaliningraders with household batteries, inverters and other necessary mechatronics. In 2025, the state-owned company wants to start production of fuel cells in a gigantic factory near the Neman in the east of the Kaliningrad region. In fact, to justify state subsidies, Avtotor must offer a range of electric cars with maximum localization.

– We are completing the construction of an electric vehicle production plant in the Kaliningrad region and are ready to produce a pilot batch by the end of 2023. And in 2024 we will start producing electric motors,” Alexander Sorokin, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Avtotor Holding, shared his ambitious plans.

But where can we test new technologies for Russia? The same remotorization would probably come in handy here. The Kaliningrad region is offered as a pilot springboard for the implementation of the mysterious concept. Avtotor even signed a corresponding agreement with the government of the compact Russian exclave.

The parking lot in the region is diverse and quite large: almost 500,000 cars, more than 60% of which are over 10 years old, and 43% have passed the 15-year mark, which is very useful when choosing a suitable vehicle for remotorization . For example, there are enough models that have already seen the types, previously produced by a local factory, for which the corresponding technical documentation exists.

What does Avtotor offer? People tired of paying for gas and maintaining their old capricious engines and transmissions should be able to dump the junk at a service authorized specifically for these needs. And if the body of a car you’ve loved for years is still more or less in order, equip it with an all-electric power plant.

Already today, the company claims that it will soon be ready to supply ready-made filling. Here, too, partners who at least master the production of electrical components will help. But the promoters of the project, of course, expect the main help from the state. And there are good reasons for that.

According to the same Mr. Sorokin today, converting a traditional car into a 100% electric car costs at least 1 million rubles: a main battery, an inverter, a gearbox, an electric motor, high-voltage wiring, a liquid cooling system, drives…

Plus the costs of dismantling and disposing of old equipment and adapting the old body for a new life. All this makes the remotorization of a conditionally used foreign car an economic utopia, even taking into account the fact that the “reborn” will never need fuel again.

In other words, it would be nice if the state partially subsidized the ‘green’ initiative for private traders. But in the field of commercial vehicles and special equipment, things look much more promising.

Suppose for the owner of even a new one, for example, a harvester or a truck worth 14 million rubles, it makes sense to spend another one or two million in order to fully cover the cost of fuel and the associated problems during subsequent operation. to eliminate . This can already be beneficial.

There is another serious obstacle that so far seems insurmountable in our country – the legalization of modifications. And here, without administrative resources – nowhere. As Alexander Sorokin emphasized, NAMI has already developed a GOST project for remotorization, according to which this process can be put on an industrial basis. In other words, the certification of the sample allows you to master the production of the conveyor belt. The document has already been sent to the Eurasian Economic Commission for consideration.

We fully support Avtotor’s powerful enterprises in the production of electric motors and new cars. But we admit that the story of the remotorization still seems unpromising to us. Given the wide variety of makes and models, it will be extremely difficult to deduce some standard algorithms and security canons for mass rework. And finally the technology.

Integrating a 300 or 400 kilogram combustible battery into the body of an old car is an extraordinary task in itself, even for a specially equipped workshop. The universal domestic production concept “will have to tinker” will not play here. But you’ll have to completely change the electrics, modernize the brakes, change the dashboard and brand new controls, among other things. Probably bodywork…

However, Avtotor company is full of optimism and they find all technical issues completely solvable. Let’s see how events develop.
