Chinese ‘trucks’: Gazelle and UAZ Profi have a serious competitor
The BN-Motors group of companies, known in some regions as a major dealer holding company engaged in the sale of new and used cars, car repair, car rental and parts sales, is opening a new field of activity. An assembly plant for light commercial vehicles BAW from the Middle Kingdom was opened in Bryansk under the brand BNM (Build new Mobility). The AvtoVzglyad portal attended a dealer conference that coincided with the launch of the project.

The BN-Motors group of companies has been on the market since 2000. There is a lot of work behind us: the establishment of dealerships, contracts with the world’s leading car manufacturers, significant operational competences have been accumulated. In recent years, the holding company has successfully promoted activities in the rental and sale of used cars.

Like everyone else, the events of recent years have taken the company somewhat out of its established rut. Some former partners have left, it’s time to look for new ones. One of these was the Chinese group BAW, known in the domestic market since the 1950s. Until now, BAW has been fulfilling contracts from the Ministry of Defense of the People’s Republic of China, but since 2020, BAW has moved from state ownership to the private sector, focusing on civilian equipment for various segments. And the firstborn of this brand in Russia were precisely light commercial vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tons.

The cars that are expected to be assembled at the Bryansk plant under BNM’s own brand will be called Woker I and Woker II – versions with single and double row cabs respectively. According to the Russian classification, the maximum gross weight is 3.5 tons, although the upper weight limit in China is 4 tons. What does a certain margin of means based on passport numbers mean? But most importantly, it will be possible to operate the equipment with a category “B” passenger license.

Today, BN-Motors is in the process of forming a dealer network as a distributor. In the future, the main calculation is made on the basis of container deliveries of vehicle kits – chassis, drive pair, body, wheels – which will be converted into finished cars at the Bryansk plant. In addition, there are facilities for adapting machines to Russian operating conditions and deepening their further localization. Well, the first trucks came from China on their own.

A truck with a load capacity of 1.5 tons is ready to enter the market in petrol (133 hp) and petrol (122 hp) versions. Cylinders for methane promise to make subsequent operation somewhat cheaper, although initially the gas and gasoline versions will turn out to be about 300,000 rubles more expensive than conventional ones. The distributor promises to realize an interservice run of 15,000 km and is already talking about a warranty of 2 years or 100,000 km.

Trucks have a low loading height (77 cm – less than that of the Gazelle). With a single-row cab, six Euro pallets fit in the loading platform, with double-row cab versions there is only room for four. In the future, it is planned to master a manufactured freight car, a refrigerator car and other superstructures. The cabin itself is well equipped. Comfortable seats, excellent visibility. Climate system air-conditioned as standard. There is a modern media system and a reversing camera.

The car is somewhat smaller in size than the same type of Gazelle. It is fairly simple in design and, according to the supplier, easy to maintain. Filters from Toyota, lubricants from the Kia line. Today, the company is ready to deliver hundreds of cars, but the question is to whom.

“Our immediate goal is to create a dealer network of partners and sell 1,000 to 2,000 cars per month,” says Aleksey Podshchekoldin, Chairman of the Board of Directors of BN-Motors Group of Companies and President of the Russian Automobile Dealers Association (ROAD). , shared his plans with the AvtoVzglyad portal. “In a few years, we want to master the assembly of a full cycle, and later, taking into account our plans for the development of the model line, there are plans to occupy up to 20% of the Russian LCV segment.

At the same time, Mr. Podshchekoldin said that for the current Walkers, the company would soon be a small truck with a payload of up to a ton, in the creation of which the Germans, represented by Volkswagen, participated. As well as heavier equipment with a load capacity of up to 3 tons. And of course about the prices: the supplier is trying to minimize them in the current difficult circumstances of exchange rate turmoil and – especially – after the increase in recycling costs.

Today, when the delivery of car kits has not yet begun, a BAW with a single-row cabin in a purely gasoline version will cost a conditional buyer in Blagoveshchensk 2,080,000 rubles. For versions with a two-row cabin, the price is higher – 2,110,000 rubles. And gas / gasoline equipment will add at least another 290,000 rubles to the prices. And we notice this, without the delivery costs. Moreover, BN-Motors has not yet acquired any dealers that will have their own margin.

In short, an experienced, energetic and rather ambitious player has appeared on the market. The product is chosen correctly – from the demanded segment, and the car itself seems quite modern and practical.

If it is possible to fully deploy the assembly, followed by localization, then there is a good chance that the supplier can offer a competitive price. And the planned expansion of the model line should only play into the hands. BN-Motors aims to sell 5,000 light commercial vehicles by 2024 and increase sales to 25,000 vehicles per year by 2030.
