The AB InBev Efes brewery (Spaten, Velkopopovicky Kozel, Sibirskaya Korona, Klinskoye and others) complained to the mayor about the increase in costs and the decrease in sales, at the same time asking to support the company by returning weak alcohol to the counters of petrol station. The fuel market as a whole endorsed this idea, noting that the practice could be extended to the entire country. But experts are sounding the alarm.
For example, Daniil Briman, chairman of the board of the Union of Russian Brewers, believes that such easing in a separate subject of the Russian Federation will bring unreasonable benefits to market participants. In addition, the sale of alcohol at gas stations “is not that simple and contradicts the campaigns of transnational beer producers to combat alcohol consumption while driving,” the Kommersant expert quotes.
At the same time, world practice shows that the sale of alcoholic beverages at gas stations does not affect the accident rate in any way. Which in general makes sense. Nobody cancels the driving ban. And those who don’t care about the rules and their own lives can ‘quench their thirst’ at any roadside shop.
The mayor of the capital has not yet responded to the brewers’ proposal. But the Federal Antimonopoly Service shared their view – the agency approves the initiative and promises to support the experiment as much as possible.
