Will the Munich Motor Show surprise with something other than electric cars?
The auto show in Munich is the successor to the large-scale auto show in Frankfurt, where innovations regularly – once every two years – flowed, not only from Europe, but from all over the world. Together with the location, the strategy of the exhibition also changed. The main thing at the event, now known as IAA Mobility, is not a presentation of cars, but a demonstration of technological advancements in mobility. That is, electric motors, batteries and other autopilots …

Simply put, from 5 to 10 September 2023, exhibitors will present everything related to mobility: electric cars, drones, electric scooters and bicycles. Traditional transport, if there is still room, only takes place in a diluted, pure hybrid form.

Whatever they say today, Germany is still home to the largest car manufacturers in the world. As a rule, they show the most important things at home.

BMW has confirmed that it will introduce a new electric concept of the Neue Klasse line, which will unfold in full width from 2025 and promises to be nothing less than another milestone in the Bavarian concern’s business. The as-yet-unnamed concept closes out the i Vision series: the i Vision Circular shown there in 2021 and the i Vision Dee shown at CES earlier this year (pictured below).

The third capstone of the Neue Class is expected to bring some advanced powertrains and batteries. In particular, new cylindrical elements, which allow to increase the cruising range up to 1000 km. The fast charging time is reduced by 30% and the total weight of the battery pack by 10-20%. In addition to the promising concept, the next generation of the BMW 5 Series with hybrid power plant will be presented in Munich. A curious example is the last model of the 5 series with a combustion engine.

Mercedes-Benz never stays in the shadows at home either. This time, the Stuttgarters promised to introduce a new generation of electric vehicles. Apparently they’ll be showing a first-segment prototype, an analogue of the current C-Class – with a graceful roofline reminiscent of the outgoing CLA. It will go to the assembly line next year. I remember the previous concept EQXX covered 1200 km on a single charge between Stuttgart and Goodwood. But not without help, standing on the roof of the solar panels.

The French from Renault brought a brand new Scenic. The iconic family tractor is back as an electric crossover to compete with the Tesla Model Y with its futuristic, angular design and focus on sustainability. Of course, the French novelty is also battery-operated. The premiere of the production version of the Renault 5, a ‘green’ supermini, which relies on retro styling in an attempt to charm the masses, is not ruled out.

Electrified Chinese giant BYD is expected to develop plans for further expansion in the Old World, aiming to double its already 2 million units sold worldwide. The Atto 3 crossover, the Han sedan and the Tang SUV are already rolling through Europe. And soon they will be joined by the Dolphin hatchback (pictured above) and the Seal sedan.

Yes, the Chinese have taken the holy of holies of the car seriously. In Bavaria, the brand Avatr, already known to us – a child of the collaboration between the giants Changan and Huawei – wants to seduce Europeans with a crossover with an index of 11, which was remembered after the premiere at the Shanghai Motor Show. They promise to tell the Europeans something about sedan 12.

At the Porsche stand you can get acquainted with the Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid, which the AvtoVzglyad portal recently wrote about. With 729 hp, the hybrid has become the most powerful non-fully electric production Porsche. Of. By the way, the Lamborghini Urus is made on the same platform – the one in Munich will in turn show an updated interior.

Even Tesla comes with its updated Model 3. Our British colleagues at Autocar are amazed: such an appearance is a rarity for an American brand that usually exhibits new products at tightly controlled media events.

Incidentally, Volkswagen will roll out its answer to the Tesla Model 3 in Munich: the ID 7 GTX model, which received a new two-motor power source with four-wheel drive. Of course, he won’t tear up a Tesla for a quarter of a mile, but the sum of the potential of both electric motors of 390 “horses” commands respect.
