Why did Soviet drivers actually fasten the dashboard with leather?
The leather trim of the dashboard with a mandatory line has long ceased to be a symbol of luxury and prosperity for the owner of the vehicle, but many still turn to this still Soviet method of salon tuning. Why? There are good reasons for this, especially if the car has traveled more than a hundred thousand kilometers.

Torpedo or, as they say in some regions, parpriz on fashionable and modern cars will always be covered with leatherette. Plastic is a material for the arms. Bad configurations and bad owners. However, the latter do not lose heart and independently carry out this attractive-looking and pleasant-to-the-touch refinement. Fortunately, such an “improvement” with a certain mindset and hands will be cheap. And its functionality is not only decorative.

Sheathing of car plastic with leather began in the USSR: in the days of developed socialism there was little tuning, but the imagination was more than enough. Yes, and there were no problems getting a few pieces of leatherette – no one canceled the barter. So the late Zjiguli and Moskvich torpedoes compensated for the soft finish lost with the update: over the years, the Soviet automotive industry – like, in fact, the architecture – only refused all sorts of embellishments and luxury. Soft interior elements, chrome and other things were a thing of the past. But not from the mind of a starving motorist.

However, soft dashboards and other overlays had not only decorative connotations: such a design made it possible to avoid countless crickets, beeps and other very unpleasant musical accompaniments. And they appeared quite quickly: the technique and elements for fixing the finishing parts did not have the quality and inherent technical miscalculation. They didn’t know the word ‘absolutely’.

So the people did not wait for the appearance of the first crack and immediately began to do it again. How? Yes, what was at hand and most suitable for the goals and objectives: leatherette. He did it beautifully – he got both a visual, tactile and functional effect. I stacked “from the hip” – only the last.

Today’s approach is no different from our grandfather’s: whatever the “euro” prefix precedes the name, it will crack if made in our damned latitudes. Although this was also true of the early “Koreans” or the “Japanese” who retired their resource three times. Everything is subject to time. So a piece of synthetic material, called faux leather for its beauty, will also serve us well. And for exactly the same purposes: to be beautiful, pleasant and, above all, quiet.
