Let’s briefly recall how Nissan behaved after the start of the Russian special operation in Ukraine. The Japanese stopped importing cars of foreign assembly, and then stopped the factory, which is located near St. Petersburg. Recently, the head of the company, Makoto Uchida, said that operations in the Russian market would not resume, at least until the end of March 2023.
Obviously, our officials did not like such statements very much … Minister of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov even promised that his subordinates would meet with the management of the Russian office of the Japanese brand. At the same time, some media interpreted his words as hinting at the imminent and imminent nationalization of the Nissan plant.
In fact, the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade spoke much less loudly. His main message is that the fate of the shut down companies owned by foreign owners must be decided here and now. Otherwise, foreign wealth owners will pause for months or years, as the head of Nissan said.
“Now we continue to work on those companies that are making decisions about a longer shutdown period for businesses. That same Nissan postponed the start of production until March next year. We will meet them first,” said Mr. Manturov.
Admittedly, Nissan has few options left after this meeting. More precisely, just two. The first is to restart production despite all kinds of sanctions and public condemnations. But this comes with financial and reputational risks… The second – more logical – “VAZ” scenario, when the plant is transferred to a Russian structure, but with the possibility of buyback.
What they think about this in the Russian office of Nissan, the AvtoVzglyad portal was not answered. However, as our own sources in the official representative office of the brand told us, due to the increased attention of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the company is preparing a large and emergency meeting, where the question of the further activities of the Japanese brand in Russia will be discussed.
That’s exactly why the country needs another car factory that has nothing to produce? For starters, it would be nice to load up the freshly baked MAZ Moskvich, the former Renault Russia, and then recruit other assets. But apparently they have decided at the top that the nationalization of everything that lies bad (or rather is worth doing) is a primordial task. And apparently they will not delay …
