Russians spent a record amount on used cars

In August this year, our fellow citizens have spent a record amount of 586.5 billion rubles on used cars over the past three years – this is 55% more than in August last year. Experts believe that Russians, as usual, are in a hurry to invest money as the ruble continues to depreciate.

As TASS reports with reference to a study by the company Otkritie Auto and the agency Autostat, the volume of the secondary market has been a record since January 2021. In August, 551,300 used cars were purchased – 26% more than in August 2022 (438,900). In the first eight months, citizens’ expenditure on used cars amounted to almost 3.8 trillion rubles.

Most cars on the secondary market are 10 years and older. In August, 214.4 billion rubles were spent on it – 36.6% of the market. Last year that was 33.1%. With cars under five years old, the situation is the opposite: if in August 2022 they occupied 37.6% of the used car market, now they own 32.1% – 188.2 billion rubles were spent on them.

Cars in the category 5-9 years old cost Russian residents 183.9 billion rubles – over the year their share increased from 29.3% to 31.4%. European and Japanese brands are leading the way in terms of spending. 207.9 billion rubles were spent on the purchase of “Europeans”, 206.2 billion were spent on “Japanese” copies.
