After new legal requirements for taxi transportation came into force, the cost of a trip in certain regions increased by up to 44%, and on average across the country – by 5%. And experts say this is not the limit.

As RBC reports citing Vladimir Lugovenko, Deputy Director of the Department of State Policy on Automobile and Urban Passenger Transport of the Ministry of Transport, in half of Russia’s regions there has been a significant increase in prices for taxi services. Costs remained unchanged in 45% of regions and decreased in only 5%. On average, the price increase for taxi services in Russia was 5%.

The official placed the main blame for the price increases on the regions; they say, they were not sufficiently prepared for the implementation of the taxi law before it came into effect on September 1. “This means that there were no controls on taxis in these regions. The reasons for the negative dynamics are also the artificial excitement associated with the new law, the rising cost of consumables and the pressure on sanctions,” Lugovenko said.

Deputy Head of the Road Transport Department of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of the Eurasian Economic Commission Irina Saukova said that by the end of 2023 the cost of a taxi will increase by 10%, and the head of the Association of the Self-Employed of Russia is even Igor Zhmakin even more pessimistic: he is certain that prices for the service will increase twice by the end of the year.
