How car owners unexpectedly quickly remove their car’s shock absorbers
An inconspicuous, but very important part of the suspension – the shock absorber – the device is quite tenacious. But only on the condition that the driver really knows what to do with it; it is absolutely not recommended.

Every car owner knows: if you drive into a pothole at a good speed, the shock absorbers will certainly not thank you for it. And if these types of incidents happen regularly, they will quickly fail. This part of the “safety measures” when operating damping suspension elements requires no additional explanation.

Everything is as clear as possible: if someone behind the wheel was hit so hard in a pothole, what a shock it must have been for the poor guy! For this reason, a careful car owner always tries to avoid bumps of any kind wherever possible. An attempt is made to extend the life of the shock absorbers. But at the same time, he can (unknowingly) successfully ruin this suspension unit with his other actions. And sometimes it does it extremely effectively.

For example, few motorists realize that the lifespan of a shock absorber directly depends on the load that usually “hangs” on it. That is, of the total weight of the car. If you like to fill the cabin with obese fellow travelers, and at the same time pile a lot of heavy junk in the trunk and regularly make long trips in this mode, keep in mind: the shock absorbers of your passenger car will not last long . You yourself will deplete their resources at an accelerated pace.

Another, no less fatal factor for the unit we are considering is the generally neglected condition of the suspension. When the various bushings, levers, silent blocks and other elements are in order, this entire system works as designed by the designers. At the same time, the shock absorbers are subjected to standard loads, which they cope with perfectly.

A fairly “worn” suspension behaves very differently. As failure approaches, it “pulls” the condition of the shock absorbers with it. Which ultimately leads to the need to replace them with new ones when it comes to ‘shaking up’ the chassis. And shock absorbers really do not like serious work “without preliminary caresses” in the cold season.

This means that in severe frosts the car must be used in the following mode: I left the house in the morning, started it and bravely drove it over bumps and potholes. And this despite the fact that the working fluid in the shock absorber has thickened due to the cold and is difficult to pass through the valves of the device. Which leads to accelerated failure of oil seals and other seals. To prevent the shock absorber from leaking unexpectedly for this reason, in winter, immediately after starting from a standstill, drive calmly and carefully for a kilometer or two to give it time to warm up.
