The city council announced that it would revive the domestic car brand Moskvich. And let’s remember what he was like and what kind of products he produced. Indeed, in addition to serial modifications, engineers also designed truly unique examples. The AvtoVzglyad portal presents a selection of rare Muscovites.

Few people remember, but the first Moskvich, based on the German Opel Kadett, produced since 1936, rolled off the assembly line ten years later than its predecessor, right after the Great Patriotic War – it was a curved Moskvich-400, which immediately loved the motorists of the time. Before the assembly from Germany, everything that was needed was removed as a repair. But there is also something made by our engineers – some drawings, stamping molds and so on. In general it went well. So much so that, looking for ways to develop the Moskvich model range, our engineers tried to come up with very exotic models. Let’s talk about them.

For example, in 1947 a prototype pickup truck appeared. As the creators believed, the car would be very useful in the countryside, when transporting furniture and other goods. But the series never came to fruition. This pickup only became the basis for the creation of the APA-7 airfield launcher. On the other hand, pick-ups were made at third-party auto repair plants, repairing cars that had served their purpose or had been in an accident.

In 1957, western fashion for minibuses reached the USSR. And again, under the leadership of the head of the experimental workshop IA Gladilin and a specialist in the field of car suspension VI Evlanov, the search for a domestic response to America and Europe began, which resulted in the birth of a nine-seat prototype. Moskvich-A9. Tires from GAZ-21, rear axle from Moskvich-401, chassis parts from 402. It was also equipped with an overhead valve engine of the 407 model and a 4-speed gearbox, for a moment, from the race Moskvich – G1-405.

But, unfortunately, the higher authorities believed that he could not compete with the more comfortable RAF minibuses, and he was far from the Ulyanovsk Loaf. In addition, the cost of the minibus was quite high. In general, they gave birth, but they could not grow into something interesting.

There were real SUVs in the Moskvich family. It’s a wonder how good Moskvich-415 was. Developed for three years, it seemed that the car could have a future no worse than the first villains Jeep and Toyota, but unfortunately this model was not left to chance. In all fairness, it must be said that it was she who formed the basis of the VAZ Niva.

And how good was the “Moskvich” in the back of a coupe convertible! It was built on the basis of the 408, which turned out to be so beautiful that it was popular not only in the USSR, but also abroad. A two-door convertible top would have been a logical evolution of the line-up at the time. However, the factory conveyor was occupied by other models and there was no place for the convertible. As a result of these beauties, only a few pieces were produced that have not survived to this day.

There were many more interesting models in the life of the plant. However, this is an opportunity to write not one, but a whole series of articles. We especially want to hope that the favorite brand of Soviet motorists will be revived and once again demonstrate the strength and power of the domestic auto industry.
