Until now, there is no consensus within the community of professional oilers as to which engine lubricant can clearly meet the definition of “fully synthetic oil.” The AvtoVzglyad portal explored the nuances of these disagreements.
Without going into the technical details, we note that “synthetic” can generally be called any lubricant obtained by synthesizing the oil base from the components extracted during oil production and refining. But in the field of synthesis technologies there may be options.
A relatively inexpensive technology for producing oils is hydrocracking. Lubricants obtained in this way are the most common on the market today. There is also a more expensive one: polyalphaolefin (PAO). The lubricant obtained by this method is usually called fully synthetic. Such products are obtained by polymerization of alpha-olefins. A number of important features distinguish them from conventional motor oils extracted from petroleum.
First of all, it is the chemical structure. In PAO oils it turns out to be purer and more homogeneous, making them more stable and more resistant to oxidation and decomposition. Another important aspect: PAOs have high thermal stability and the ability to maintain their properties over a wide temperature range. At the same time, they exhibit excellent lubricating properties, which allows them to reduce friction and wear of engine parts.
In addition, PAO lubricants provide improved oxidation resistance over a longer period of time than conventional oils. It is not without reason that lubricants with LongLife approval, once developed by BMW, are usually produced on the basis of poly-alphaolefins.
They also have a lower viscosity at low temperatures, making it easier for the engine to start during cold periods. Finally, such “synthetics” are less likely to form deposits and carbon deposits on engine parts, which helps keep the engine clean and efficient.
As you can see, fully synthetic motor oils have many benefits. That is why PAO automotive lubricants generally have noticeably better properties compared to other synthetic oils obtained from petroleum. As shown by the experience of their use in the transport sector, they ensure higher engine performance, improve wear protection and provide significant fuel savings.
And returning to the question of whether there are fully synthetic oils on our market today, we answer: of course there are! Even despite the fact that many Western oil brands have left the country. But as they say: every cloud has a silver lining! They were quickly “replaced” by well-known manufacturers from the UAE, Turkey or, for example, South Korea. In addition, Korean manufacturers have become noticeably more active in our country, as evidenced by the emergence of new brands.
Let’s say we sell a lot of products from The Beast brand, under whose logo various motor oils are produced. They are produced by SHL, one of the major suppliers of lubricants to the South Korean automotive industry. The company supplies Russia with most of the required specifications for The Beast car lubricants.
For example, among them there is such a popular product among us as fully synthetic motor oil of the PAO 5W−30 series. It is designed for modern, powerful diesel and petrol engines. The lubricant is characterized by high oxidation resistance and excellent viscosity properties at low temperatures. This quality is very important for most Russian regions when driving cars in winter. In addition, this PAO oil has a reduced sulphate ash content, which allows it to be used in engines equipped with particulate filters
