Why is motorcycle braking dangerous: the disadvantages of ‘professional’ driving techniques
There is an old Internet meme according to which, before braking with the engine, the car first brakes with the bumper, then with the radiator, and only then with the engine itself. This joke can sometimes become reality when the driver wants to demonstrate his skills in slowing down the car using the power source.

Please note that engine braking is especially necessary when driving in a mode that requires frequent and intensive braking of the vehicle. For example, during a long descent on a mountain road or when the driver’s driving style is ‘ragged’ – with frequent sharp acceleration and heavy braking. That is, in cases where the brakes are heavily loaded and there is a real threat that they will overheat and fail for this reason. Under such conditions, engine braking makes life much easier for them.

This technique means that the gearbox is shifted to a lower gear without pressing the accelerator pedal. In this case, it is not the engine that turns the wheels, but on the contrary: the transmission turns the crankshaft of the engine, combating the natural compression in the cylinders of the power unit. This trick is best performed with a manual transmission. The CVT engine brakes well. Decelerating in this way more or less effectively on cars equipped with a classic “automatic” or robotic gearbox can only be done by forcefully shifting the gears “down” in the manual transmission control mode.

However, keep in mind that using this driving technique can easily cause quite a few problems. The fact is that when we brake with the engine, the brake lights do not light up. For this reason, the driver of the car behind you may not immediately react to the deceleration of the “engine” and collide with you.

If you select the wrong gear when engine braking, the rotational deceleration of the drive wheels will be too sharp. On a slippery surface, such a difference in traction can easily lead to loss of traction of the tires on the road, a sharp skid and an accident.

Rough use of the engine brake can be fatal to the engine’s timing mechanism – both chain and belt. Until the disk breaks. During engine braking, the engine throttle is closed. Which causes something like a vacuum to be created in the intake manifold. In the case of a new drive unit, this vacuum can at some point wear out the worn seals. Which makes serious engine repairs inevitable.
