As Kommersant reports, citing official statistics of the traffic police, the number of accidents on Russian roads increased by 5.1% from January to October 2023 to 110 thousand incidents. The number of injured rose by 4.5% to 137.7 thousand people, and the number of deaths by 2.5% to 11.8 thousand. The largest increase in the number of traffic incidents occurred in the Omsk region (+35.6% compared to the same period last year), the Republic of Kalmykia (+34.4%), the Novosibirsk region (+25.8%), the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania (+23.8%) and Kostroma region (+22.5%). Regions with the maximum increase in deaths are the Republic of Karelia (+80%), the Republic of Kalmykia (+61.4%), the Republic of Tyva (+50%), Yaroslavl (+43.7%) and Ivanovo ( +36.8%) areas.
In Russia as a whole, the number of collisions increased by 5% (to 48.5 thousand), rollovers – by 30.9% (to 3.69 thousand), collisions with cyclists – by 11% (4.98 thousand), collisions with obstacles – by 4.2% (5.34 thousand). But the number of accidents due to technical malfunctions decreased by 9.4% – to only 144, which, by the way, indicates the complete uselessness of such an institution as a mandatory technical inspection.
It is curious that the comments of the traffic police on this issue say almost nothing about the role of bad roads, disgusting logistics and the actual incompetence of the traffic police themselves in the growth of the number of traffic accidents.
