Unfortunately, car glass is a consumable item in Russia. Almost every motorist has changed their windshield at some point, because colonies of flying stones, raised spikes and other small but sharp debris sail our way invisibly with luggage in roof racks and various items that are transported without proper preparation. However, the rear window does not suffer from this as often. But if it does suffer, it is fatal. Details are on the AvtoVzglyad portal.

The forums and topics of the World Wide Web, or rather the Russian part of it, are full of unexpected announcements: the rear window has broken. In three out of four cases, it concerns hatchbacks and station wagons, but the owner has not noticed a ‘specific’ arrival, for example from the oncoming vehicle. Although this can usually be heard even when loud music is played. What’s the problem? Glass that shatters in the blink of an eye can hardly be called anything other than ‘popados’, especially if this unpleasant event occurs in winter. And for some reason, judging by the posts on social networks, it happens only in winter.

Initially, such a problem could be attributed to the metal of a used car, which was weakened by time. After all, it is here, on the used one, that it cracks. We read the “evidence”: “Japanese”, “Germans”, “French”. Is everyone weakened at the same time? And it would be nice if the ‘Chinese’ were on the lists, but it’s all ‘beau monde’: VW, Peugeot, Mitsubishi and even the divine Toyota! No, this is clearly not a matter of bodies.

Although, according to the logic of things, it is the violation of geometry due to age, artisanal repairs and numerous consequences of accidents that should have caused the glass to crack. On the other hand, not only the rear ones would burst, but also the front ones! And in the statements of those who were caught, it is exclusively the “fifth door”.

I once had the opportunity to participate in such an unpleasant event: the rear window of a Renault Grand Scenic, freshly imported from Europe – remember, it was such a convenient and practical car – cracked while driving. There were no other cars around, the road could have illuminated the runway, and the glass itself looked new. No cracks, no chips, no signs of repair. Unless it is colored… But this argument seems completely unrealistic, and it happened in winter in the foothills of the Khibiny Mountains.

What design feature does the glass of the trunk lid have? The correct answer is heating. Wires parallel to the ground run almost along the entire perimeter, which allows you to quickly get rid of ice. They are often blamed for: damage to the conductive material, a drop of water and remembering your name. Could this happen? Hard to believe.

Another option is much more realistic: it is the glued glass that does not open that breaks. Glass glue is a reliable thing, but over the years (and Russian car parts age every day, and the average age is almost 15 years), holes form. In one day, enough water may build up in one of them that, when the ice freezes, it will put enough stress on the glass that it will eventually shatter. It is impossible to foresee this, so you have to be quietly optimistic. Why not re-glue the glass once a year?
