How to radically solve the problem of windshield wipers smearing dirt on the glass
Mud sludge landing on a car’s windshield is an inescapable problem in big cities, where utilities liberally pour reagents on the asphalt. The problem is that even good windshield wipers cannot always cope with their immediate responsibilities.

If the windshield wiper blades (or one of them) begin to smear dirt on the windshield in a very ugly way, the driver has a strong desire to replace them with new ones. However, there are often cases when even installing something new does not change the vision situation. Many car owners will probably remember that in some car where they had to sit behind the wheel, part of the windshield categorically refused to clean, no matter how many times they turned on the wipers. This phenomenon is especially common in winter.

For example, in many Japanese cars (even premium cars), the right stock brush often does a poor job of removing dirt and moisture from the glass using approximately the center of the rubber blade. Even if it’s completely new. Let us note that there is no need to look for miracles in this phenomenon.

In the vast majority of cases, this problem is typical for modern frameless wipers. They really have a tendency to “smear”, especially often in winter. This is especially noticeable when it comes to a large car model, where the windshield has a high degree of curvature. That is, very convex. When faced with the task of high-quality cleaning of such a surface, frameless wipers often give in. Partly because in winter conditions it is necessary to press the entire cleaning edge harder against the surface. Due to their design, ‘frameless’ units cannot provide the required force over their entire length.

In addition, the rubber of the brush loses its elasticity in the cold and has to remove a lot of dirt and snow. To combat such disgrace, a radical solution is emerging: the transition from frameless brushes to framed or hybrid brushes. Their design provides a clearer connection of the rubber element to the glass, which often becomes a decisive factor in winter.

Brushes can ‘smear’ for other reasons, not just because of a less than adequate design. The total force pressing the wiper against the glass is provided by a spring mounted in the wiper arm. It tends to weaken over time. This manifests itself in cars that are far from new. In addition, a similar effect is observed when the car owner regularly leaves them lifted during parking, so that the windshield wipers do not freeze to the glass. The payback time is the stretching of the springs of the lines.

Solving this problem is quite simple. We replace the poorly functioning elastic element with a new one. Moreover, it is not necessary to use the “original”. Cheap analogues, as a rule, serve no worse.

In older cars, poor window cleaning in winter can occur for another reason: due to play in the bushing for attaching the arm to the so-called windshield wiper trapezium. If there is not good stiffness in the connection, there is no reason to talk about any downforce. It is easy to detect looseness: just grab the strap with your hand and shake it slightly from side to side – everything will immediately become clear. The malfunction is usually resolved by simply tightening the loose nut.
