If the navigator drives “out of mind”, the crew turns to the first and, realizing the mistake, is forced to go back and look for the right turn. And the stopwatch is ticking…
Laying such a route is a great art. Stewards of the race Nikita Ilyasov and Timur Ulzhabaev and the main referee of the race Vladimir Korolev showed a very high level of professionalism. For judges, the fight against “meperism” is also relevant. We have already discussed this phenomenon: specialists receive scans of the road book, lay the route on the map and draw the optimal route in the navigator. The navigator tells you the exit in time and takes you to the desired “cutoff”.
This trick is quite developed in rally raids. They say that in Dakar, a few kilometers before the finish, discarded telephones are lying around: it is forbidden to take unforeseen navigation equipment and mobile telephones are becoming disposable devices. I passed the podium – and threw it away before the finish so as not to burn out.
Previously, the road book was issued on the evening of the previous day, and the navigator had the opportunity to think about the route, highlight difficult places. But there was time for the mappers’ work. Now the road book is published just before the start. There is very little time for shipping and mapping. You have to take a picture of the map, send it in, get an edited track. Not the fact that there is enough time, and communication does not always allow you to send the necessary amount of information.
So meperstvo gradually fades. In addition, in Volgograd the route was laid out in such a way that it was impossible to cut the route without losing the obligatory point. And this is a penalty time, from such a cut – only damage. In general, the authors of the route have done very well.

On the second day, two competitions were held: the Cup of Russia and the Championship of the Volgograd Region. As we said before, the regional championship was organized exclusively at the request of truck teams, because trucks do not participate in the Russian Cup. But buggies can race in both competitions. Athletes decided: run, therefore run – we will declare both in the cup and in the regional championship. They raced in the literal sense of the word ‘from sunrise to sunset’.
The Russian Cup started at 7 am and the regional championship at approximately 1 pm. In one day buggy crews traveled more than 400 km – the load is of course very heavy. People still held their ground, but the equipment didn’t work. In the afternoon the buggies stopped for technical reasons and the crews had to collect tools.
One team dropped out of the race during the prologue: Vyacheslav Paputsky and Igor Chudaikin on the Yamaha YXZ 1000R rocked on bumps and turned. Usually the “ears” for the buggy are not so terrible, they put them on wheels and drove on. But here there were four bends through the hood, the crew is intact, but the combat vehicle needs to be restored.
Besides the prologue, there was one long day of racing in the Russian Cup. Andrey Sushentsov and Dmitry Pavlov on the prototype Nissan NP-300 Pick-Up became the winners in the R category. In category N – Evgeny Yakovlev and Viktor Shitikov on UAZ CARGO. And finally, the most interesting category is N2. In it, buggies perform. Armen Puzyan and Kirill Shubin were fastest over the three 57k laps in the Can-Am Maverick X3. And immediately, almost without rest, we went to the stage of the championship of the Volgograd region – three more laps of 80 km each. In total, the buggies covered 411 combat kilometers in one day, not counting the prologue! But trucks have already driven solo here.
According to the results of the second day, the top five were occupied by KamAZ and MAZ trucks. The Belarusian crew of Sergei Vyazovich broke through to third place with great difficulty. The crew of Sergey Kupriyanov closes the load five, which, together with his brother Alexander KamAZ, runs on gas fuel. Then Sadko NEXT of the GAZ Reid Sport team moves into the truck standings.
“Our trucks are assembled on standard components and assemblies, so we are not tasked with fighting sports cars that have little in common with standard products,” said Mikhail Shklyaev, head of the freight department of the GAZ Raid Sport team. – We all came to the Volgograd region to “roll in” for the Silk Way Rally. We have to check the cars, support the skills of the crews. I really like how the rally is organised. I hope the last day won’t be worse!..
On the third and final day of the race, two rounds of 80 kilometers will be run. This is a mirror image of the second day – you should pass the same route, but in the opposite direction.
