The authorities of Moscow and the Moscow Region have agreed with Rosavtodor to allocate a public transport lane on the M7 highway. It will be released on December 25 and will function as an experiment at least until the end of March.
As Kommersant reports, the Ministry of Transport of the Moscow Region has started developing special lanes for public transport on the M7 highway. The length of the “special road” will be 15 km – from the intersection of the highway with Transportnaya Street to Balashikha in both directions.
The authorities of the capital and region have been pushing for this for years, but Rosavtodor has been against it every time, citing the traffic jams that the bus lane would cause. Now the department has finally changed its mind, without stating the reasons for this decision but noting that “the project was initiated by Moscow and the region”:
– The decision was taken due to the difficult transport situation for public transport. Travel time along the section of the highway towards Moscow can now reach 50 minutes during rush hour. The effectiveness of the experiment is judged based on three months’ results. The work will be carried out depending on weather conditions, officials said. There is no need to guess what consequences the narrowing of the road will have for ordinary motorists in the region: motorized citizens will be stuck in traffic jams for several hours.
