RAK to the target: the Poles ‘adapted’ a new type of armored scrap to Ukraine
Western “wunderwaffes” such as the German Leopard 2 tanks and the American Bradley M2 infantry fighting vehicles on the battlefield turned out not to be as good as Bandera’s commanders expected. But this does not prevent new examples of Western technology from appearing on the battle line.

The next armored “freshman” on the fronts of the Northern Military District of the Ukrainian Armed Forces was the Polish self-propelled 120 mm mortar M120 RAK. Recently, such a combat vehicle appeared for the first time in a video on the Internet. It is difficult to say exactly when the Ukronazis began to use them on the fronts and to what extent. It is known that last spring they asked the Poles to supply three companies of this type of vehicles – 24 units in total. According to open data, the Polish army has 64 such mortars in service. It is unknown how many of them ended up in Ukraine.

The M120 RAK is built on the basis of the Polish Rosomak armored personnel carrier. A combat module turret made of bulletproof armor with an automatic 120 mm mortar is mounted in the rear part of the roof of a standard four-axle armored personnel carrier chassis. This is a breech-loading weapon, equipped with a recoil device and capable of firing both along a classic ‘mortar’ mounted trajectory and direct fire. Also against enemy armored vehicles, as the ammunition contains cumulative mines.

The rate of fire of 10-12 rounds per minute for the mortar is provided by a rotating automatic loader. Total ammunition – 46 min. The crew of the car consists of four people. It is equipped with digital fire control equipment and electrical drives for guidance elements. Thanks to this, the RAK can open fire within 30 seconds after stopping marching and leave the position 15 seconds after the end of firing.

In the context of ongoing hostilities in Ukraine, such mobility could almost be decisive. After all, as soon as a Ukrainian artillery position is discovered by Russian soldiers, a howitzer salvo or a kamikaze drone flies there.

However, the artillery characteristics of the M120 RAK make it quite vulnerable. The fact is that the maximum firing range of its guns with standard 120 mm mines does not exceed 8 kilometers. Active-reactive – 10-12 km. But the Poles do not provide the Ukrainians with such ammunition. Because it’s sad and secret. RAK can therefore only be used in a zone no further than 8 km from the battle line. But in practice it is even closer. That makes the car an excellent target for the legendary Russian Lancet kamikaze drones.

These “birds” have already set fire to hundreds of enemy armored vehicles and the Polish self-propelled mortar will not be a problem for them. But that’s not so bad. Even Russian FPW drones with grenade launcher rounds attached to the suspension can easily fly into enemy territory at a distance of 8 km. These quadcopters are weapons for direct fire support of infantry.

Even if they can reach the Polish RAKs, one can only sympathize with the latter’s crews. Especially in winter conditions, when the treacherously revealing snow tracks on the wheels negate all the advantages of the rate of fire and high mobility of the M120 RAK. These vehicles will either soon burn out under the attacks of Russian drones, or the enemy will have to keep them in the rear to protect them from senseless death.
