Why do some cars have extra side lights in the trunk?

Additional rear light clusters have been installed in the luggage compartment of a number of passenger cars, with double side lights, direction indicators and brake lights. But for what? Is this really a banal optimization of the costs associated with various modifications to the same car, or worse: the production costs?

It’s no secret that all lighting equipment in a car is the most important safety element. Including the rear one, which informs the motorists following you of the driver’s intentions to perform a certain maneuver, whether stopping or turning. All functionality is ‘wired’ into one block, which also illuminates the dimensions of the vehicle at night. And, as a rule, these optics are located on several body elements at once: the bumper, the tailgate and even the wings.

However, for the sake of design refinements, design artists sometimes install lighting devices only on the trunk lid, which is especially typical for station wagons, hatchbacks, vans and some crossovers. And when you open the luggage compartment door, the lights shine only upwards. In other words: only airline pilots can see them, but unfortunately drivers driving behind them cannot.

But why would you raise the fifth door while driving? That’s right: for transporting oversized cargo. It is also common for the trunk to become deformed during an accident. And driving without side and brake lights is extremely unsafe. Moreover: prohibited according to the Traffic Regulations. That is why car manufacturers resorted to a trick by integrating additional rear lights into the end parts of the luggage compartment walls. Take for example the subcompact Audi A1, the versatile Opel Insignia Sports Tourer, the handsome Aston Martin Lagonda, the Opel Cascada convertible and the MINI microvan.

Meanwhile, modern drivers themselves are not averse to installing additional light signals in their cars, which effectively illuminate the inside of the luggage compartment in particular and also shine perfectly when driving with the trunk open. Such lighting abounds in the expanses of the famous Chinese flea market. The “dimensions” are cheap and their installation does not take much time. But it will be light and safe.
