According to a joint study by the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation and the insurance company Ingosstrakh, the main cause of traffic accidents in the country is the inexperience of drivers (51.2%). In addition, accidents are often caused by fatigue (20.6%) and slow reaction of drivers to the road situation (7.8%).
As Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports, citing experts, residents of Irkutsk (20.4%), Perm (18.3%) and Samara (18%), are more likely than others to be involved in traffic incidents. Drivers in Ulyanovsk (17.8%), Novokuznetsk (17.7%) and St. Petersburg (17.4%) are slightly luckier. Moscow ‘steers’, strangely enough, boasts the lowest accident rate (8.8%). Every second accident occurred due to drivers not dividing the intersection (46.9%), secondly speeding (24.1%), thirdly failure to obey traffic lights (11.4%) .
Nikolai Duvanov, associate professor at the Department of Civil Law at Russia’s Plekhanov Economic University, is convinced that the high number of accidents on the roads is largely due to the disregard of traffic rules, both due to insufficient knowledge and a frivolous attitude towards of it. “At the same time, even the most attentive and law-abiding driver can be involved in an accident through the fault of third parties,” he said. “On the other hand, as research shows, the frequency of traffic accidents is an indicator of economic activity,” said Alexey Zubets, director of the Center for Socio-Economic Research at the Financial University.
