The former Hyundai factory in Saint Petersburg has found a way to restore work

The Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Rus car plant in the northern capital was closed today, January 9, 2024. The company currently operates in one shift, training staff and maintaining equipment.

As Fontanka reports with reference to the press service of the company HMMR, the restarted factory now employs 800 people. Hyundai shut down the business in March 2022 due to parts supply issues following the introduction of sanctions against Russia. At the end of that year, management laid off two-thirds of its employees. And in December 2023 it was announced that Hyundai sold the factory in Saint Petersburg to Art-Finance.

The intention is to resume car assembly at the company in mid-2024. Most likely, the factory will produce the same models from the remaining components, but under the Chinese brand, since the Koreans retained the rights to use the Hyundai trademark for themselves. Possible options are GAC and BAIC.

The Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Rus enterprise has been operating in St. Petersburg since 2010 – the Hyundai Solaris and Creta models, as well as the Kia Rio and Rio X-Line models rolled off the assembly line.
