An interesting study was conducted by experts from the overseas Consumer Reports, who surveyed just under 350,000 car owners who in the first three years after purchasing a “swallow” somehow had to visit technical centers for various reasons. This, as you understand, is not about planned maintenance at all. Experts divided the defects of cars purchased between 2020 and 2023 into twenty main categories. These include: problems with the operation of the power unit and gearbox, malfunctions in the fuel system, defects in the braking mechanisms, problems with the chassis, as well as electronics malfunctions and electrical problems.
And what do you think? As expected, there were no sensations – the most “indestructible” are still cars from Japan. During the course of their research, analysts took into account consumer votes on a point scale from zero to 100, based on which brands and models were assigned appropriate coefficients. The most ‘sustainable’ brand was undoubtedly Lexus, whose products could score 79 points. The owners of these premium cars experienced virtually no technical problems during use during the first three years after purchase.
Second place went to the “related” Toyota, which topped the Consumer Reports rating a year earlier. The reliability index of its cars was 76 points. But be surprised: the top three is closed by the British MINI, ahead of the Japanese Honda and Acura, Subaru and Mazda. No less striking in the top ten brands with the most durable cars was the appearance of the German BMW, whose models, however, according to the experience of car owners, are more vulnerable than Porsche. There were no other Europeans in the TOP-10. And Korean Kia shut it down. Fact: cars from this brand abandon their owners much more often than products from the EU.
In terms of models, Toyota topped the rankings of the very best, with seven different Toyotas in the top ten alone! The leader was the 4Runner SUV, followed by the Camry and RAV4, so loved by the Russians. Corolla and Highlander were recognized as more problematic, which were surpassed by the Bavarian crossover BMW X5 and the Japanese Subaru Forester in the number of breakdowns and visits to car repair shops. Well, let’s take it into account.
