The Russians broke the absolute record for spending money on new cars

In December, our fellow citizens spent 384.7 billion rubles on the purchase of new cars, and for the whole year – 3.13 trillion rubles. In both cases, these are record amounts in the entire history of observations of the Russian car market.

According to the Otkritie Auto company, sales results in December were 17% higher than November figures and 2.6 times higher than last year (in the last month of 2022 – 145.5 billion rubles). The record year in terms of volume so far was 2021, when Russians spent 3.05 trillion rubles on cars, but 2023 surpassed this level.

In December, 341.1 billion rubles were spent on the purchase of cars in the mass segment, which amounted to 88.7% of the total amount. The share of premium cars in expenditure was 11.3%, or 43.6 billion. In quantitative terms, the difference is even more striking: 116.4 thousand budget cars were sold, or 97.5% of the entire market. And bonuses are only 3,000 units, only 2.5%.

The share of Chinese cars reached a record 67% of sales volume in December: 72.9 thousand cars worth 257.7 billion rubles. Other brands lag behind brands from China at least five times ‘in terms of money’. For example, Russians spent 45.7 billion rubles on the purchase of products from the domestic automotive industry – that is, 35.6 thousand cars.
