Volkswagen Golf is celebrating its half-century anniversary this year – for this event the German brand has prepared a restyling of the current eighth generation, which will be the last for the model in its usual form. The successor, expected to be released in 2028, will be built on the new SSP platform and will only have electric powertrains.
The easiest way to recognize the updated Golf is by the luminous emblem on the radiator grille, since only true fans of the model will notice changes in the design of the lighting equipment. In addition, the hatchback received different rims and four new body colors.
There are many more changes on the inside. The interior has a new multimedia system screen with a diagonal of 10.4 to 12.9 inches – depending on the configuration, instead of touch buttons on the steering wheel, analog buttons are used again and the own voice assistant is connected to the ChatGPT chatbot.
The ‘regular’ Golf received 1.5-liter turbo engines with a power of 116 and 150 ‘horses’ with a six-speed manual transmission in the basic version and a 7-speed DSG robot in the eTSI hybrid version. The plug-in hybrid already develops 204 hp, the Golf GTE version – 272 “horses”. They are equipped with a 6-speed DSG gearbox and front-wheel drive. Diesels also remain in the range: 116 hp with a six-speed manual gearbox and 147 hp with a DSG robot, both with front-wheel drive. Finally, the GTI version is only equipped with a 7-speed DSG gearbox and develops 265 hp.
In the second half of the year, Volkswagen will show the updated Golf GTI Clubsport, Golf R and Golf Variant R, and in 2025 versions with all-wheel drive and TSI engines will appear.
The updated eighth-generation Golf can come to Russia only thanks to the efforts of parallel imports. Now you can find a “before the reform” hatchback with low mileage on sale – judging by aggregators of free advertising, prices for it start at about 2,500,000 rubles.
