Many car owners refer to diesel as diesel fuel. However, in reality these are completely different concepts. Both are, of course, products of petroleum distillation, but they differ significantly in composition. Therefore, it is strongly not recommended to confuse them. And here’s why…
Diesel fuel – colloquially known as ‘diesel’ – consists of small hydrocarbon molecules containing about twenty carbon atoms. Simply put, such a “fuel” has a lower viscosity, as well as a certain resistance to thickening due to thermal changes. In addition, when stored and used properly, it is easily flammable at very low temperatures.
The diesel fraction undergoes additional purification before it is converted into fuel, after which special chemical additives are added to the composition to increase the properties of the ‘diesel’. Finally, a prerequisite is the presence of sulfur, which is necessary for optimal functioning of the ‘fuel’ in modern car engines.
Diesel fuel is also a fuel, but much heavier. To put it in the right language: we are talking about the so-called solar oil, which as a rule does not contain the same sulfur. And it actually acts as part of diesel fuel, even though it is not completely diesel fuel.
Taken separately, the solarium is much thicker. In addition, it boils at higher temperatures than diesel and freezes faster. The product is obtained by direct distillation of individual oil fractions with mandatory treatment with alkali.
In other words, diesel oil, which has a sharp and long-lasting smell, due to its characteristics and properties, can only be used in certain types of power plants, but not in car engines. It is only widely used in low speed units!
For example in military, industrial and agricultural equipment, tractors, but also on diesel ships and low speed diesel locomotives. Diesel fuel is excellent for powering diesel-electric generators and heating boilers, among other things. Moreover, it costs much less than a diesel engine.
