Research by Transport & Environment shows that new cars have increased in width by an average of 0.5 centimeters annually over the past 23 years. Officials called this trend frightening – today there are quite a few models on the market with an indicator approaching or already exceeding two meters. These include, for example, BMW X5 and X6 (2004 mm), BMW Range Rover Sport (1990mm) and VW Touareg (1984mm).
The American Dodge Ram pick-up imported into Europe is 2085 mm wide – almost 30 cm wider than a regular parking space, European officials are shocked. In their opinion, this seriously endangers the safety of other road users as well as cyclists and pedestrians. So now the European Commission will consider the issue of limiting the maximum width of new cars so that the increase in size does not lead to an increase in the number of accidents and deaths on the road.
