According to the press service of the European Commission, the presence of a device called Event Data Recorder (EDR) will be mandatory for all new passenger cars of the M1 class and commercial models of the N1 class, including pick-ups and vans weighing no more than 3,500 kg.
Officials believe the ‘black box’ will help authorities and insurance companies investigate accidents – the recorder will record parameters five seconds before impact and 0.3 seconds after impact. The memory stores vehicle speed, acceleration parameters, vehicle position on the road and information about the response of built-in security systems. The EDR will also record whether the eCall emergency call system, which has been mandatory in Europe since April 2018, has responded.
The “black box” must store information “with a high degree of accuracy and ensure data security” related to the machine. The system is integrated into the airbag control unit and cannot be switched off manually. The owner of the data stored in the recorder is the owner of the car. The information is collected anonymously and can only be provided to the appropriate authorities investigating the accident.
