Will Russia’s dying auto industry be saved by the USSR’s “sharashki”
Why did the USSR send a man into space, creating aviation, submarine fleet and other complex and technological industries and industries, but failed in the automotive industry? The answer to the question was found by car expert Sergey ASLANYAN.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Russia willingly competed with the world community in the most fashionable industries, mastering steam locomotive construction, aviation and motorization along with others. At the same time, the country did not move away from the usual stereotype of borrowing until a few centuries earlier, when it willingly accepted foreign technologies without dealing with its own technology.

Which was especially noticeable in the sensitive issue of defense, where the Russian army used exclusively foreign rifle models. The creation of the first in the history of the house gun that is named after. Mosin of the model of 1891, composed with the help of the works of the Belgian Leon Nagant, was nevertheless a breakthrough, but confused an unusual society, not ready for the idea that Russian could not be worse than foreign.

However, a single example of a domestic rifle did not shake the usual foundations, and other weapons remained strange: the Maxim machine gun, Nagant and Smith-Wesson revolvers. But when humanity turned to aviation and automobiles, Russia showed potential and discovered talented engineers, risky designers and gambling industries.

During the First World War, the country owned the production of aircraft and cars, competed with foreign countries and threatened to lead confidently. But after the revolution of 1917, the further development of the country and individual industries was not determined by industrialists, but by party leaders. It was not the engineer who decided what to design, build and produce, but the authorities, who despised the engineer for his education, glasses and French.

Aviation is lucky. In the Kremlin there were enough peasants, criminals and deserters who became the power of the people, admired airplanes and wanted this beauty in their skies. But the car did not overcome them. The horse seemed more understandable, besides, the master, who was burned alive along with the estate, had done without a car, and social revenge should have had a familiar appearance.

All the years of Soviet power, the country was preparing for war. But in this preparation it was not the young and daring, but the wise and staid, who, in particular, Semyon Budyonny, who, in spite of Mikhail Tukhachevsky, determined the strategy for a future war with powerful cavalry attacks, very quickly began to dictate their will. And when other countries built aircraft carriers, we were still cutting vines.

But the backlog in key sectors for the country in the Kremlin was noticed quite quickly. And they combined the correction of errors with the general trend – the Gulag.

Before power was the main task: the destruction of people. But it was possible to combine it with labor tasks, successfully kill and build at the same time. Political anecdote from that time “Life in the USSR is like in a tram: half is sitting, the other is shaking.” It was then that “sharashki” was created: closed prison facilities for arrested scientists. The authorities picked up their favorite pastime: they killed and dictated. The prisoners were assigned tasks, the strategy of which was determined by the country’s senior leaders. And if they still loved aviation and partially understood it, they didn’t accept motorization. The image of the master, with whom they continued to compete by indolence, remained equestrian.

But killing was more important than inventing. Space Sergei Korolev miraculously survived. But Andrei Vavilov is not. And George Langemak was shot with rapture and pleasure. The list of smart girls and talents destroyed is painfully long. And every execution order bears the signature of another Kremlin elder, or even several.

Since we didn’t have “sharash” on the car profile, we released this topic, but they didn’t go beyond borrowing. Prison aviation of other people’s ideas made a breakthrough into independent advanced designs and passed the Luftwaffe’s test. The auto industry remained at the stage of studying other people’s experience and low-tech copying attempts.

When Nikita Khrushchev arrived in time with self-financing, the remaining talents who were still free, created people with the skill and desire to work, in the final impulse for the country what they had not done before: vacuum cleaners, washing machines, refrigerators , televisions. But the auto industry has not mastered it.

For sluggish Russia, the foundation must always be laid last time. Just as today we didn’t have time to get into universal automation and mobile telephony, arrived late, gave up after the first attempts and switched to borrowing and importing, so with the auto industry we only admired the beauty of other people’s achievements.

Under Soviet rule, we were ashamed of our car industry. But the brilliant Mercedes planted poisonous shoots of jealousy in the poor mind of the leadership. And now they proclaimed the auto industry the title industry, made it a showcase and began to admire that we drive foreign cars, leaving our own cars to the mercy.

Today, the country’s auto industry has returned home, not Russian, but imported. But the lack of production was added to the lack of competence. The USSR, although bad, sometimes unbearably bad, produced the whole range of components. Now, instead of the factories, there are vacant lots and elite homes.

… But there is a perspective. By reviving the USSR, the CPSU, the Komsomol, the NKVD, the Cheka, the Gulag, we can invert the auto industry and create “sharashki” in this profile.
