Raising salaries doesn’t help: there is no one in Russia to build new roads
The conflict in Ukraine forces Russian road workers to quickly look for new suppliers of equipment and some construction materials, but this is by no means the only acute problem in the industry. It is still possible to find cars, another question is that there is no one to work for them, because even high salaries do not attract potential candidates.

The industry is still unable to cope with the consequences of the pandemic, which has exacerbated the staff shortage, and this is a serious problem, Vladimir Monastyrev said during his speech at the forum of road initiatives organized by the state-owned company Avtodor “Innovative technologies and intelligent transport systems in the road construction”, CEO of Transstroymekhanizatsiya.

According to him, the shortage of specialists forces employers to extend shifts up to 20 days, accept equipment downtime while constantly increasing salaries. But that also doesn’t help with the staffing level: for employees – for example the operators of construction machines – a fierce battle is raging, they are being poached.

By the way, if you now look at the sites where vacancies are published, you can see that the rate for the same machinists, even in the regions, reaches 200,000 rubles.

Monastyrev was also supported by Robert Urazov, Director General of the ANO Professional Excellence Development Agency. He noted, for his part, that the staff shortage is largely due to the “non-prestigious” professions: today’s youth is not averse to leading road construction, but sitting in a hot office and not driving a truck crane.

In general, the problem is serious and large-scale, but no one knows how to solve it – there are no specific plans and proposals. Industry experts are convinced that action should be taken not only on construction sites, but also in schools and institutions: to change young people’s minds, to adapt curricula if necessary. And do not place great hopes on immigrants from the CIS countries, because Russia is now fighting for them with other countries.
