Opinions differ widely about the speed limit on toll roads: some experts are in favor of lowering the limit, others for increasing it. In the meantime, the traffic police do not see the need to change the usual order, as the deputy head of the Main Directorate of the Road Safety Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, Police Major General Oleg Ponaryin, told the AvtoVzglyad portal.

Speaking at the forum of road initiatives “Innovative Technologies and Intelligent Transport Systems in Road Construction” organized by the state-owned company Avtodor, Mr. Ponaryin noted that since 2019, the number of deaths in road accidents and the number of accidents itself in the country has been declining rapidly. How quickly, that Russia is the world record holder in terms of pace dynamics (the result of a study by the Higher School of Economics).

He added that the levels of accidents and road safety depend directly on the quality of the roads. And it is growing, and the speeds are growing with it: more and more toll roads are appearing in the country, where cars are allowed to accelerate to 110 km/h, and in other segments – even up to 130 km/h. The authorities are not yet going to raise the limit to 150 km/h. But lowering the speed limit isn’t in their plans either.

— It is very difficult to evaluate the effectiveness of increasing the speed limit on high-speed roads. Together with the state-owned company, we accept a relative indicator of the number of deaths per 100 km of roads (however, the figures did not give the police officer for some reason – red. This allows us to stay informed – also taking into account the length of the main roads. We understand which direction we are going: for better or for worse. And so far – for the better, – said the major general of the police.
